AIR
QUALITY

We are leaders and advocates for using biomass products to improve air quality and reduce our environmental impact.

Biomass is a proven
TECHNOLOGY

Heat in the UK is currently supplied by fossil fuels, with less than 6.5% from renewable sources. This reliance on fossil fuels means that the provision of heating and hot water for our buildings and industries produces one third of the UK’s carbon emissions.

Biomass is a proven technology that generates hot water for central heating and water heating systems on a domestic and commercial scale, which are typically situated in rural areas off the gas grid. Unlike open fireplaces, older log burners and pellet stoves the RHI-registered biomass boilers are strictly regulated in terms of their nitrogen oxide (NOx) and particulate matter (PM) emissions.

The main cause of urban air pollution is transport, which accounts for around half of all NOx emissions in London and up to 70% NOx and 30% PM in concentrated areas. The few emissions originating from wood fuel heating in urban areas (only around 3-4% of NOx and PM) originates from low quality wet wood, burnt in open fires.

Wood fuel quality is very important, low quality wet wood burnt in open fires produces more smoke than dry wood, which releases more PM into the air. This is due to the increased moisture in the wood taking longer to evaporate, causing the wood to smoulder and smoke rather than fully combust. Biomass boilers utilise internal combustion and are strictly regulated, most boilers emit less than half of the legal limit of particulates.

At LC Energy we do all we can to improve air quality and reduce our environmental impact. Our depots are strategically placed around the South East of England, creating a network that can provide premium grade and quality assured wood fuel to a wide area while keeping transport emissions to a minimum.

We are leaders and advocates for using biomass to decarbonise heat and meet the government’s 2050 Net Zero targets.
