Protecting UK WOODLANd

By supporting local timber growers, we are investing in both the woodland management cycle and the longevity of Britain’s woodlands and forests.

UK
WOODLAND & TIMBER

Timber that is used for wood fuel does not have to be same high quality as that of premium market material such as construction and fencing timber.

Typically, the bottom two thirds of a tree go to sawmills for construction, fencing and furniture, while the top third was deemed a waste product. The biomass market has utilised “this waste product” to create energy, instead of being openly burnt in woodlands as a means of disposal.

The utilisation of this wood increases the woodland area that the forestry industry are able to manage, resulting in more rural jobs, generating income and development opportunities for local communities as well as providing areas for recreational activities that have been shown to have positive impacts on mental and physical health.

If a woodland is left unmanaged, it will continue to grow until it reaches it’s final stage in succession allowing the dominant trees to reach their optimum height. The dominance of large trees can reduce the amount of sunlight that is able to reach the forest floor, in turn reducing the number of other species that can grow in the area and limiting the types of habitats that available for woodland animals. Sustainable Forest Management can help mimic the mosaic of habitats that are present in many UK woodlands, boosting the biodiversity of the area and making them more productive.

Trees will only sequester CO2 as they are growing, therefore the constant management of growing of trees is necessary to continue the cycle. LC Energy supports woodland management through re-planting and purchasing correctly certified timber including Grown In Britain, Forest Commission Felling Licenses, Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) License and English Woodland Grant Scheme (EWGS). These schemes assure that the timber is grown in Britain and the woodlands are managed to the governments UK Forestry and public procurement standards.
