HETAS Approved Biomass Maintenance Scheme

The HETAS Approved Biomass Maintenance Scheme, “HABMS”, was introduced by BEIS in April 2022, and includes a notification process to ensure biomass boilers are serviced at least once a year to increase efficiency of the boiler and reduce potentially harmful emissions.

The scheme is now a requirement of the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI), so that recipients of Non-domestic RHI payments are obliged to complete an annual service in each payment year by a business or engineer that is accredited to the new MCS040 standard.

The regulations came into force on 1st April 2022 and will be mandatory from April 2023. However, Ofgem could request boiler servicing evidence at any time from April 2022 and whilst it is not a legal requirement, if you are unable to provide evidence of an annual service conducted by an accredited business then you will not qualify for RHI payments going forwards.

LC Energy is accredited to MCS040 which means we meet the required HABMS standard.

We will provide you with a service report and will notify Ofgem through HETAS once the annual boiler service has been completed. You will receive an automated notification once this has been uploaded to Ofgem.

You need to provide evidence to Ofgem that your boiler has been serviced by an accredited business, such as LC Energy to continue receiving RHI payments. Please ensure that you have your RHI number to hand as you will need to reference this at your next boiler service to continue receiving payments. Ofgem will be able to provide you with your RHI number if you cannot find it.
